LECTURER NAME : Sir Fairuz Bin Khalid

ACTIVITY : Circle weeding

DATE : 9 May 2024

LOCATION : Farm Management Unit, UiTM Melaka, Campus Jasin

INRTODUCTION

  • This week we to continue the circle weeding work so that this durian tree or plant can get enough nutrients and to make it easier for us to do the next task.

OBJECTIVE

  • To reducing competition from weeds can increase crop yields and the quality of agricultural products.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
  • Hoe (1 unit)
  • Glove (1 pair)
  • Boots (1 pair)
  • Lawn machine (1 unit)

WORK SCHEDULE

6.30 A.M to 8.00 A.M
  • As usual, before going down to their respective sections, students will be involved in a roll call. We sang three songs, the song Negaraku, the song Wawasan Setia Warga UiTM and the song Planters. In this rollcall we also heard presentations from students in semester 1, semester 2 and semester 3. This week they were asked to present why there is a decline in the quality of palm oil. Among the causes are fertilizer supply and cost constraints. The National Palm Oil Producers Council (CPOPC) has emphasized that soaring fertilizer costs are limiting palm oil production1. Fertilizers play an important role in increasing crop yields, and when prices rise, it affects the overall supply of palm oil. Next, the lingering labor shortage in the palm oil industry continues to constrain production. Inadequate labor causes delays in harvesting and processing, affecting overall production. Slain, bad weather conditions have disrupted the production of other vegetable oils such as soybean, sunflower and mustard seed oil. As a result, there is a deficit in the global supply of vegetable oil. This situation encourages a shift in demand to cheaper palm oil, thus supporting the price of crude palm oil. In addition, El Nino, a climate phenomenon characterized by warmer sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, is expected to reduce palm oil production in the main producing country of Indonesia. Therefore, crude palm oil (CPO) prices are projected to average at least 11% higher in 2024 than the previous year.

8.00 A.M to 8.30 A.M
  • We prepare the equipment that will be used on the durian plot.
  • We started moving to the durian patch and planning the day's work trip.

8.30 A.M to 10.30 A.M
  • In the plot, we moved to the respective rows of durian trees to continue circle weeding on the durian trees that had not finished circle weeding. We started making circle weeds on the durian tree. We started with the tree that was planted for the 2nd time in 2020 because the durian tree has a slightly smaller canopy compared to the tree that was planted for the 1st time in 2017 which has a larger canopy and caused a little difficulty for us to do circle weeding.
  • There is also an incoming tractor to make a path between each row of trees or durian plants.
PLANTS THAT HAVE COMPLETED CIRCLE WEEDING:

No.

Before

After

Challenges when doing work:

1.

Tree no. 6

·       Has such thick weeds.

·       The irrigation system is not visible.

·       Can remove as many weeds as possible that are dense around the plant.

·       The irrigation system is visible after circle weeding.

·       The drainage system is embedded in the weeds resulting in the need to work carefully.

·       Thick weeds.

·       There is an irrigation system near the plants.

2.

Tree no. 8

10.30 A.M to 11.00 A.M
  • We were allowed to go up to Agrotech. We need to clean and repack the equipment that we have used in the plot.
  • We were allowed to go back to college.

OBSERVATION

From the activity, students can understand why it is necessary to remove weeds found near plants.
